College of Santa Fe Celebrates Its Graduating Class of 2010
Mayor David Coss thanks students for their role in saving the school.
Santa Fe, NM—June 2, 2010—In his remarks during the College of Santa Fe's commencement exercises, Santa Fe Mayor David Coss congratulated students of the class of 2010 for their academic accomplishments and their role in saving the school. "You are the first class to graduate from this ‘new' college. I have been impressed by your achievements and your spirits," Coss said after receiving an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters.
"You conducted yourselves with spirit, determination and style," Coss continued. The May 15 commencement ceremony, which approximately 1,200 people attended at the Rosemarie Shellaberger Tennis Center on the grounds of the college, included an a capella rendition of the national anthem sung by Anna Smith, a graduating theatre major.
Graduating senior Christina Quintana, a theatre major who will attend Columbia University in the fall, spoke about the special nature of the college. "I wish the real world could be like the College of Santa Fe," she said. Quintana went on to note that, like doctors, lawyers and politicians, "artists of America are doing something equally important. We remind people and ourselves that we are alive!"
Also speaking at commencement was Kimberly Kiel, a humanities graduate and single mother who waited until her two sons graduated from high school before she finished her college education. Kiel said, "I admire my fellow students for sticking through it with me—the exhaustion, the long weekends of homework, and the nights we gave up with family and friends to get to this point." Kiel owns a successful financial advisory business, but she wanted a degree "because college is so much more than a diploma. And completing an education…feels so rewarding," she said.
Including Kiel, 186 students graduated from the Evening and Weekend Program (now called the Professional and Continuing Studies Department) with associate, bachelor's or master's degrees. The traditional program awarded 113 students with bachelor's degrees in the arts.
